5 Simple Ways to Practice Mindfulness

In a world that constantly distracts and distresses, do you ever feel like you’re “losing your mind”?

If so, you’re not alone. Many of us have fallen into the trap of mindless scrolling and consumption, only to wonder where the time went.

Even while standing in line at the grocery store, eating, or brushing our teeth, we often find ourselves distracted, using our phones to escape or worrying about the day ahead.

Whenever I’m distracted, I become less productive and more prone to frustration. Yoga has been instrumental in helping me slow down and choose mindfulness, bringing me back to the present moment.

5 simple ways to practice mindfulness throughout your day:

Mind Your Posture:

Pay attention to your posture during everyday tasks like standing in line or brushing your teeth. Are you distributing your weight evenly between your feet, or are you leaning more on one side? Think of Tadasana (Mountain Pose): feet under your hips, neutral pelvis, ribcage stacked over your pelvis, head over shoulders. Stand tall and balanced.

Feel Your Steps:

Become aware of each step you take. A modern dance teacher once taught me to feel the outermost layer of my skin, then the deeper layers, and finally my bones with every step. This mindfulness is especially helpful for runners, as every step counts when working to improve efficiency and endurance.

Phone-Free Mealtime:

Try to eliminate phone usage during meals. Start small by dedicating one day a week to phone-free meals or designating one meal a day as your “most mindful meal.” This can help you reconnect with the experience of eating and improve your overall mindfulness.

Deep Breathing:

Incorporate deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. Take a few moments throughout the day to focus on your breath, inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. This simple practice can ground you in the present moment and reduce stress.

Mindful Listening:

Engage fully in conversations by practicing mindful listening. Instead of thinking about your response while the other person is speaking, focus entirely on what they are saying. This can improve your relationships and enhance your ability to stay present.

By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you can cultivate mindfulness and find balance amidst the chaos. Remember, everything you need to become more mindful is already within you. It just takes practice to make it a way of life.
