Is Beach Yoga Good for Beginners? Here's What to Expect

So you're planning a trip to Hawaiʻi. You've seen the videos of people flowing on the sand, ocean in the background, sunrise painting the sky pink and gold. And you're thinking... should I try that?

Short answer: yes. And we really hope you do.

We've been welcoming first-timers to the mat at Kailua Beach since 2017, people from all over the world who had never done a single yoga pose before. And almost every single one of them walks away saying the same thing: "I can't believe I almost didn't come."

So if you're on the fence, this one's for you. 🤍

You Do Not Need to Be Flexible

We'll say it louder for the people in the back.

You do not need to be flexible to do yoga. Flexibility is something that develops through practice, not something you need to walk in with. We've never once turned someone away for being "too stiff."

What you do need? A willingness to show up and try. That's it.

Every pose has options. You can go deeper if you want to, or you can ease back and work at your own pace.

Nancy from Las Vegas put it perfectly after her very first yoga class ever with us:

"The instructor was welcoming, easy-going, and guided us with such a calm and soothing voice... It was truly a unique and memorable experience." Airbnb

Wait... The Sand Actually Helps

This surprises a lot of people.

Sand is softer than a studio floor. Your knees, your wrists, your ankles all get a natural cushion that you just don't get indoors. A lot of beginners find it easier to get comfortable on the ground at the beach than they expected.

Now, balance poses are a different story. Tree pose on sand is humbling for everyone, beginners and seasoned yogis alike. The ground shifts a little, your foot sinks, and suddenly you're doing a whole lot more work to stay upright. But that's honestly part of what makes it fun. It keeps you present. It makes you laugh. And it's a great reminder that yoga isn't about being perfect, it's about showing up, challenging yourself and breathing through it. 🌊

What Our Classes Actually Look Like

Here's a little walkthrough so you know exactly what you're getting into:

We start slow. 🧘 You'll settle onto your mat, kick off your shoes, and feel the sand under your feet. We'll begin with a few minutes of breathwork to help you arrive and leave whatever you had going on before you got here.

We ease into movement. Gentle warm-up, connecting breath to movement. Neck rolls, spinal movement, waking the body up softly.

We flow together. Your teacher will guide you through each pose and offer modifications along the way. Common poses you might see include Downward Dog, Cobra, Warrior I and II, Cat-Cow, and Child's Pose.

We end in Savasana. You lie on your back with your eyes closed, taking in all the sounds and sensations around you. The rolling ocean waves, the gentle breeze on your skin, the songs of the birds overhead. Warm sun brightening the landscape. Stillness. Connection. Immersed in nature. The best place for savasana in our opinion.

One of our students described it as "very relaxing and peaceful" and said she'd come back on her next visit.

Classes are all levels and genuinely beginner friendly. Come as you are.

What to Bring

Keep it simple:

  • Water

  • Comfortable clothes and layers — anything you can move in works. It can be a bit chilly or windy in the mornings, so dress in layers. If it's light rain we will try to continue practice as best we can. If you like to plan ahead, you can order some gear before your trip.

  • A towel for sand, for sweat, or post-class ocean dip!

  • Mats are available to rent if you don't have one.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen-- you probably won't need it for our 6am class, but if you're planning to stay at the beach after, make sure it's reef-safe. Hawaiʻi has banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to protect the coral reefs, so look for mineral-based zinc oxide or titanium dioxide formulas. Here's a good guide if you're not sure what to look for. 🪸

Let's Talk About the Weather (Because This is Hawaiʻi) 🌦️

The island does what it wants.

Some mornings the sky is on fire with color and the water is glass and it feels like the whole universe conspired to give you the perfect practice.

Other mornings, the wind has something to say. Or the rain rolls in off the Ko'olaus and suddenly we are all drenched.

We always do our best to hold class. A little wind? We practice. Light rain? We practice. We actually love practicing in a warm Hawaiian drizzle, there's something so magical about it, and we may be blessed with a beautiful rainbow or DOUBLE RAINBOW. 🌈🌈

People practicing yoga on a sandy beach under a rainbow, with arms raised. The ocean and a colorful sky create a peaceful scene.

One of our TripAdvisor reviewers shared a morning that started dark and blustery, then poured rain, then cleared to sunshine with a full rainbow and "a Disney explosion of birds bursting from under the rainbow." Their takeaway? "Don't worry about the weather, it's all worth it!"

Sometimes the weather genuinely says "not today" and we have to make the call to cancel for safety and comfort. We know that's disappointing, especially if you're only on island for a few days. Since weather can change so quickly, we often will make a weather call in the morning. Please reach out if you're not sure. We will reschedule if possible or refund you if we have to cancel class.

The Thing Nobody Tells You

A lot of first-timers tell us they felt something on the mat they weren't expecting.

Not just a good stretch. Not just a workout. Not just the aesthetic pics.

Maybe it's the combination of moving your body, breathing deeply, and being surrounded by that much beauty all at once. Maybe it's just that you gave yourself an hour to start your morning slowly when you're used to going a hundred miles an hour.

One of our IFY community members described the experience as "truly unique" and called it "a perfect way to start your mornings if you are in Kailua."

And a TripAdvisor reviewer who came back for 20+ classes wrote: "This always puts me in a good mood and sets a positive tone for my day."

We see it all the time. People get a little emotional. People feel genuinely peaceful for the first time in a while. People leave and immediately want to come back.

You might just be one of them. 🤍
